Correct Row Width Boosts Soybean Yields Across Planting

Soybeans sown in rows spaced 20 to 32 inches yield 2 to 4 bushels per acre more than wider or narrower rows, says Iowa State College extension agronomist Dyas. Narrower rows favor weed control and higher yields but require more seed and may reduce bean quality when drilled solid. In northern Iowa most beans are grown in cornlike spacings of 8 to 42 inches, enabling weed control by row cultivation with minimal seed use, though per acre yields are lower than with narrower spacings. Planting equipment can adjust spacing by shortening the gauge marker to fit 2, 3, or 4-row planters.
