.iSudangrass As A Useful Pasture Crop
Supplemental pasture crops help Iowa farmers with pasture problems. Ralph Krenzine of Iowa State College notes sudangrass and oats as key supplements. Oats provide quick spring forage and work with grass legume mixes for several weeks of grazing. Sudangrass, especially Piper variety, yields midsummer pasture with reduced prussic acid risk, best sown after mid May in a well prepared seedbed. Plant 15 to 25 pounds per acre. grazing begins about 6 weeks after planting, at 20 inches tall for safety. Rotating fields and staggered planting improve recovery.
