Cattle feeders see spring markets amid tight supply
Farm economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State College says feeders should move cattle intended for spring markets as the current scarcity may yield good prices. He notes January 1 cattle on feed suggest more upper grade cattle will reach market in April to June, with some not counted yet in full feed. Various factors delayed weight gain this winter, including late moving cattle, hay feeding, wet fields, and cautious buying by feeders. Prices may rise through March but could ease if January data holds.
