More Fires Do Not Follow More Rain In 1943 Iowa
Agricultural engineer Henry Gliese explains that higher rainfall does not raise barn fires from spontaneous combustion. Damp seasons slow hay leaf drying, reducing safe moisture levels. hay should aim for 25 30 percent moisture for alfalfa and clover, and 20 percent for baled hay. Salt may not prevent losses, fan drying helps, and roof leaks should be repaired to keep hay dry.
