Mrs. Mervin Lauck expresses gratitude to relatives and friends for cards gifts flowers visits while in hospital and at home. She notes the kindness was greatly appreciated.
John Damitz of near Lameni planted his first kernel in a hill about 70 years ago and has taken part in every spring corn planting since.
The Portland Progress Club met June 16 at the Portland Community Hall with 12 members and five guests. Hostesses included Mrs. Axel Carlson and Mrs. R I Simpson, with program on a book report and Sun Time by Mrs. W J Stewart. Numerous social visits, farm bureau picnic details, open house events, and local visits to relatives fill the long column of community life and upcoming events, including the Four Corner Social Club and next meetings in July and September.
Local society reports list Mrs. J R Tisdale hosting a W S C S social on June 23. Several families from Des Moines, Algona, Britt, and Lake Mills are recorded visiting relatives and taking trips to California and Minnesota. A probate notice for John A Harms and a pesticide caution are included.
Immanuel Lutheran Church in Maquoketa lists services for June 26 and July 8 including morning worship and a mission festival with meals. In the same town a 4500 pound safe, a pickup truck, and five tires were stolen. the safe and vehicle were recovered but $175 in cash remains missing.
