Plant disease woes hit popular Iowa roses
Mal cotin Shurtleff, plant pathologist at Jawa State College, notes black spot and powdery mildew as the two main rose diseases. Black spot is widespread, affecting teas and polyanthos, with yellowing leaves and early leaf drop. Powdery mildew harms climbers and ramblers, causing white patches and distorted growth. Control involves regular fungicide sprays, and cleanup of plant debris in fall. Also includes rug care tips and mosquito prevention.
