Plan milk and cream cooling systems in the spring

Farmers are advised to prepare cooling setups for milk and cream during post-planting field work. A galvanized tank between the well and stock tank, or a lumber tank with insulation, protects from sun and heat. Water cooling is emphasized, with several daily changes in hot weather. Cream should be stirred after cold water immersion and when mixing lots, never combining warm and cold. A cellar or refrigerator is inadequate for cream cooling. Ideal cream tests between 30 and 40 percent fat. For detailed guidance, request Extension bulletin No. 69 from the Extension Service at Iowa State College, Ames.
