Barnes learns of a loan offer from Rushcroft while Miss Thackeray becomes a paying guest. Rushcroft plans a Broadway comeback with a four act drama, and Barnes eyeing a possible profit, secures a debt with a personal note. Barnes investigates Green Fancy, probed by suspicions about a mysterious woman and a hidden locale.
Wealthy New Yorker Thomas K. Barnes travels toward the Canadian border where a girl gives him a map to Green Fancy a house of mystery. Sheriff detains Barnes as Green Fancy guests insist the affair does not involve their residence.
In a tense exchange, De Sota, O'Dowd, and Barnes discuss a missing guest. A woman claimed to head to Green Fancy but no guest arrived, and the driver—a small, elderly man in a Panhard—was barely seen at night. The trio ponders the added female mystery and looming danger.
