Cool Spring May Reduces Pheasant Hatch
Biologists of the Conservation Commission note that 1969 pheasant production may be down due to a cool spring. Pheasant biologist Richard Nomsen cites a link between higher spring temperatures and nesting success. Despite expected lower hatch, a high adult population might offset losses, with 1955’s warm spring producing a bumper crop and higher carryover of nesting birds.

Conservation officers completed brood counts of roosters and pheasants to gauge statewide nesting success trends. Final pheasant numbers will be reported in late summer after analysis of the 1958 brood data.
