Lightning struck the Bennie Beenken farm barn Sunday night around 9:30, burning the new structure and its contents including harnesses and five calves. Muddy roads delayed Titonka fire department, and by the time they arrived the barn was ruined. insurance covered the loss.
Mr and Mrs Henry Swalve and family express thanks to friends and neighbors for kindness shown during the death of their infant daughter Rosa Marie. Building a new hip roof barn 32 by 52 feet on Dr Hametreet s Bancroft farm uses salvaged lumber from the wrecked old barn.
June Lamoreux of Stevensville Montana graduated last week as salutatorian of her class at Stevensville High School. She earned a Montana college scholarship and plans to enroll at the State University of Montana Missoula next fall. She also won a typing competency award.
August Meyer of Pine City Minnesota arrived Friday for a brief visit with sister Mrs C Badie and husband whom he had not seen in thirty years. He left Pine City thirty years ago and settled in Minnesota living on a farm ten miles from Pine City for twenty years. He has three married daughters and three married sons, one son still in Pine City. He once lived in Maryland during his long absence. His wife died seven years ago and he now lives alone on his farm, having farmed at German Valley while a citizen of Kossuth over thirty years ago. He will be remembered by old neighbors and friends.
Mr and Mrs W G Gallmeyer of Barney North Dakota arrived Monday in Iowa for a week with relatives. They visited the Senne family and planned to see Rev and Mrs P Mueller at Winthrop Minnesota before returning home by way of Greene and Wahpeton. Their notes mention family members in Wyoming Turton and near Winthrop and refer to local businesses and civic activity in Mtonka and Wahpeton.
A fire destroyed the Bucl Public School building last Sunday night. Value estimated at 20,000 dollars, fully insured, with a library of about 1,000 volumes and fixtures totaled. Authorities note the site may be rebuilt this summer. plans discussed with officials.
June Adela Overmeyer, daughter of a former superintendent, will be brought home by ambulance from Des Moines hospital this week. She and two other teachers were seriously injured in an earlier bus route accident east of Des Moines.
Will Visit the Fatherland Algona August Huenhold of the Algona Greenhouses and Theodore Swalve both of Algona bought tickets from J. A. Frech on the North German Lloyd Bremen liner to sail August 29 for Bremen Germany. They will visit Germany Holland and the Worlds Pair in Paris. This is Huenhold's fifth trip and Swalve's eleventh trip across.
Memorial Day observances at Algona included a Sunday service at the Memorial Church for veterans of all wars. Rev. R. M. Sehwyhart delivered an impressive sermon. A lengthy parade followed on Monday with veterans and auxiliaries, and Governor Kraschel spoke to a large crowd at Riverview Cemetery.
On May Day June 14 the Algona chapter of D A R plans to erect a granite marker at the site of Gopher College the first school house in Kossuth County 1866 Exercises will be held at the Schenk school house at 2 30 PM Harvey Tigham will speak the Algona high school band will attend The plan honors pioneer history and invites the county to attend.
Mrs Harm Limberg damaged her third right finger while shooing a setting hen. A small board splinter pierced the finger and proved stubborn to remove. Dr La Lee examined Tuesday morning and planned another extraction in a couple of days amid great pain.
Mrs J D Breen underwent a major operation at Dolmage Hospital in Buffalo Center on Tuesday afternoon. Her condition is satisfactory.
Law Wallace, Superintendent of the Motor Vehicle Department of Town, warns that any driver who did not apply for a license by July 4 will not be issued a license without examination. After July 6, a statewide drive will pursue unlicensed drivers, with prosecutions to the limit to enforce the safety measure.
B. W. Davis, longtime conservation officer based at Clear Lake, will assume leadership of conservation work in Emmet and Dickinson counties, effective June 1. Originally overseeing sixteen counties, he now heads Wright, Hamilton and Franklin after a game division reorganization. He plans to move to Arnolds Park and reside at the Tenant apartments.

Foot and mouth disease has been eradicated, anthrax rare, and tuberculosis controlled, aided by the U.S. Bureau of Animal Industry and veterinarians through extensive entry inspections of cattle, swine, sheep, and horses. millions of cattle herds remain under tuberculosis eradication surveillance. Bangs disease and hog cholera persist as major threats, with hog cholera causing about 20 million dollars in annual losses. vaccination in spring is urged to prevent most losses.
Sheriff Cassy Loss, Algona, received a telegram from Aitkin sheriff requesting the arrest of Rollin Crouch on wife desertion. Crouch was taken to Aitkin last Saturday after the arrest. Fourteen corn yield test plots were established in the county to compare sixteen hybrid and open pollinated varieties for yield, stalk stiffness, and maturity.

Fifteen year old Robert Schutjer, son of Mr and Mrs George Schutter, was wounded when his 22 Winchester rifle misfired as he hammered it after a failed attempt to dig out foxes. The bullet penetrated a leg wound, was removed by a doctor in Algona, and he recovered with no serious aftereffects. Also noted is Mrs Catherine Downs celebrating her 104th birthday on May 15 with a surprise party.
Charley Smith, a farmer southeast of Buffalo Center, died last Tuesday afternoon when his tractor plowed over him on the Joe Limberg farm. Authorities believe his head became caught between the coulter and the plow beam. Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church on Friday, May 21.

Dick B. Meyer suffered severe bruising to two fingers when his left hand was drawn into a portable mill. The injury occurred Thursday afternoon while feeding the machine. Despite the pain, Meyer continued to work.

Douglas Tienan, second son of Mr and Mrs Frank Tienan of Ventura, was severely injured Sunday afternoon when struck by an automobile while crossing near the Thompson Garage. He was taken to Park Hospital for examination and care. extent of injuries not yet known.
