Memorial services were held Sunday evening at Ramsey Reformed Church. American Legion members attended in uniform. The program featured organ prelude, Titonka School Band parade, and readings by Mrs. J A Bleich. Rev W L Patterson gave scripture and prayer, Rev Calvin Schnucker addressed the crowd, and Lt. Amos Bonacker and Lloyd Miller led the benediction and taps.

Fidac program and poppy sale at Breen Legion meeting
A large crowd attended the Fidac meeting and program at the Luther Milley home. The program included a clarinet solo, National Anthem of France, readings and a Paris The Beautiful piece. Poppy poster contest winners were Louis Oesterreicher, Geraldine Brung, and Dorothy Petersen. A lunch followed. wreaths and sprays were made, and 600 poppies sold for 60.10 to support welfare work. The Unit thanks supporters and notes the next Legion meeting is June 7 at the Legion Hall.

Safety Flag Day ceremonies held in Algona

Algona Celebrates Schemel Couple 65th Wedding Anniversary
The Algona community marked the 65th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Phillip Schemel as their family hosted a celebration. The Schemels, longtime residents and retired farmers, moved to Algona nearly 20 years ago after years in Illinois and Minnesota. Memorial Day services in Riverview cemetery drew a large crowd with a wreath drop and a parade, led by Boy Scouts, honoring service members buried at sea. Lieut Gov John K Valentine spoke on preserving liberty and government principles. Mrs Hugh Past organized Poppy Day, reporting 185.36 raised Saturday. Funeral services were held for George W Brown, 72, a Cresco-area farmer who lived with his son in Wells Minnesota before dying. Brown’s career included surveying work. Algona High School awarded diplomas to 63 mentors, 86 girls, and 38 boys. the 54th class graduated totaling 2820 students, with Dr Bruce Mahan of Iowa City as guest speaker.

Schroeder bound over in assault case at Algona
Algona Molyin Sehroader waived a preliminary hearing before Justice of Peace P A Can 6on and was bound over to the September term of the district grand jury on charges of assault with intent to commit vapa. Bond set at 1500 furnished by his father George Schroeder. Schroeder confessed to the brutal attack of Miss Bertha Vaske at Bancroft. Miss Vaske is reported to be recovering. Gilbert Johnson fined three dollars plus two dollars costs for driving 50 mph in a 36 mph zone at St Joe. Other motor violators’ charges pending. New cases filed include Home Owillerd Loan Corp vs Hattie B Moulds, State of Iowa and State Board of Social Welfare of Iowa foreclosure, estate of Walter Fraser with the will filed for probate.
