Fall pig crop likely down 5 percent outside Corn Belt
USDA Pig Survey shows June intentions to raise summer and fall pigs similar to last year in the Corn Belt, while farmers outside the belt plan sharp cuts. Result may be a 5 percent fall pig crop drop and potentially higher hog prices next winter. Local economist Francis A. Kutish notes profitability for Kossuth County hog farming next year. In contrast, southern states cut spring farrowings sharply due to dry weather, contributing to a 10 percent national spring pig crop drop.
