Rye for Pasture Should Be Planted Soon Says Agent
Kossuth County farmers with limited pasture for fall pigs or next spring sow herds should plant rye now. Plant any time after August 1 to late fall, with earlier sowing boosting fall pasture. Two to three acres near hog yards sown in fall provide fall pasture, winter forage, and early spring pasture. Rye pasture offers spring benefits, helping sows maintain weight and pigs gain faster. Use about 6 pecks of seed per acre, broadcast in corn and cover by dragging.
