Yields rise with legume aided pasture trials at Iowa State

Iowa State College agronomists report legume grass mixtures increase pasture yields. At the Soil Conservation Experimental Farm in Page County last year alfalfa and grass produced 4.06 tons of weed free dry matter per acre. Trials since 1952 test five grasses and three legumes in various combinations. Alfalfa grass outperformed other mixtures, with four to five clippings per season and late season cuts. Grasses previously grown with Ladino clover yielded about 645 lb per acre versus 585 lb when grown alone.

The text notes Supreme Court rulings and a Washington Federal Court decision distinguishing agricultural commodities from manufactured products in transit regulation. It cites April 23 1956 ruling that frei dressed poultry is agricultural, and a May 7 1958 ruling that frozen fruits and vegetables are agricultural. The Supreme Court warns that processing may merge with manufacturing, but continued identity keeps classification.

Grass and legume yields vary with mixture in trials

Carry-over on this year's grass yields remained evident. Birdfoot trefoil was the only legume among three tested that produced slightly higher weed-free dry matter per acre when grown alone. Seeded alone it yielded 1.25 tons per acre, and 1.19 tons per acre when grown with grass. Alaska seedings were the highest, averaging 3.63 tons. Perennial grasses last year—brome timothy orchard alta fescue—yielded about as in prior years when grown alone, while Kentucky bluegrass output dropped to about half the 3-year average.
