Titonka Junior Legion, hampered by rain delays, traveled to West Bend and lost 6 to 0. Bell earned the win for West Bend allowing three hits while Titonka’s Downs gave up eight hits in four innings. Bruny pitched two innings in relief, yielding one hit and no runs.
A new cement block building 150 by 35 feet is to be erected at the southeast corner of the school grounds to house three classrooms and the school buses. A rear addition will hold the heating plant and toilets and future plans include space for manual training. Large trees in the site must be blasted and removed with a tractor.
Rev A Roskamp leads the Ramsey Reformed Church with Sunday School and Bible Class at 9:30 am, worship at 10:30 am in the sanctuary. Sermon topics include Pillare in the Temple of God and Great Wrecks of the Bible Saul: The Wreckage of Disobedience. Next Sunday is promotion day in Sunday School.
Immanuel Lutheran Church schedules divine services at 10 on Sunday the sixth Sunday after Trinity. Sunday School and Bible Class follow. July 1 Thursday features Ladies Aid and Mission Society at 1 30. July 2 Friday the Brotherhood hosts the ladies at 7 30. Luther League Devotional and Business meeting at 7 30 with a hay ride party.
Clair Hildman of Wesley and Loretta Priester of Whittemore were married at St Patrick's Catholic church in Whittemore last Wednesday morning June 23. Attendants included Joyce Kollasch and Erwin Hild. They will reside on the farm northwest of Wesley vacated by the Wilbur West family.
Misses Alice and Fannie Pannkuk, daughters of Mia Boyd Pannkuk, completed the machine course at the Hamilton school in Mason City after 17 months naval service. They graduated with high distinction from the First Christian church ceremony, tied to Armour & Company in Mason City.
Examinations for drivers licenses will be held at the Court House in Algona every Saturday per Sheriff Art Cogley. No call needed. Des Moines will notify when to take the exam. Licenses under 500000 extend to July 5, 1949. over 500000 require future exams with notification. A steady crowd queued through the courthouse hall.
Weekend church schedule includes morning worship at 11, Sunday School at 10, evening worship at 8 with patriotic July 4 program. Youth and Young Adult fellowships meet at church and at Mr. and Mrs. Schram's home. Camp and training events listed for Okoboji and Clear Lake. Strong storms lashed the neighborhood Friday evening with 4 high winds and hail in some spots. Crops largely escaped damage, but the Walter Miller farm southeast of Titonka suffered uprooted trees, hail damage, and a lightning strike that knocked out the transformer and shocked Virgil Miller. Only this nearby farm reported significant crop harm.
Five couples received marriage licenses from the district court clerk. They are Paul Bierstedt of Lakota and Betty Moore of Algona, Christy Olsen Jr. of Whittemore and Helen M. Graham of Burt, Elmer Peterson and Esther Breen both of Titonka, Alvin A. Becker of Corwith and Marie A. Hellman of Bancroft, Friend A. Taft and Olive Knowles both of Fort Dodge.
American Legion Auxiliary holds regular July business meeting at the Legion hall on Tuesday evening July 6 with past presidents hosting. Newly elected officers will name committees for the coming year and members are urged to attend. Elisabeth Kennedy, outgoing president, asks members to pay dues as a tribute at this meeting.
Alfred C. Marders pastor leads Divine Worship at 10. Sunday School and Bible Class. Brotherhood meets Thursday July 1 at 8. Report on district convention to be given. Ladies meet Wednesday July 7 at 2. Hostesses Bonno Schutter Ted VanHove Henry Plasier and Harry Ricklefs.
Valley Farmettes held their monthly meeting on Tuesday evening June 22 at the home of Velida Bruns. A steak supper opened the gathering served by the hostess. Nine members answered roll call with “My Favorite Fruit.” Plans for upcoming activities were discussed. next meeting will be at Beverly and Marilyn Stecker’s home in July.
The Lakota Women's Christian Association of the Presbyterian church met in the auditorium for their monthly gathering. Mrs. T. C. Schaper opened with prayer, the group sang several pieces, Doris Jean Heitland performed two marimba selections, and various members led meditations and prayers. CARE package letters were shared, expressing gratitude for the food, with hostesses named for the event.
Titonka residents recount long teaching days as Delores Lady visits friends. Andrew Swanson from St Paul visits his brother John, who he’s stayed with this past week, while employed in a moody shop for six years. Local couples and families from Cayatal Lake and Lakota attend a Sunday gathering at Ben Slehimann’s home.
The Farmers Co-Operative Elevator of Woden held its annual meeting at the Woden Legion hall on Saturday night June 26. Manager W D Hemmingson reported year sales of 829149 dollars with 30420 dollars saved, to be paid as patronage dividends at 6 44 cents per bushel on grain and 8 percent of merchandise. Glenn Pogeler of North Iowa Co Op Soybean Processing Association spoke on soybean processing and uses. The Quin tones from Iowa State Teachers College entertained, followed by ice cream at the city park.
Louis Kellner, 12, son of Mr and Mrs Matt Kellner, has been taken to Des Moines for polio treatment. The boy is described as a polio patient and the family seeks care for his condition.
Five pressure cooker clinics are scheduled in Kossuth County in July led by Alma Schultz and Annis McCart. Homemakers bring cookers for gauge and valve checks. complete disassembly and cleaning. Bring rags and a wrench. new canning and freezing bulletins will be available.
Mrs Mary Ball and Jay Budlong united in marriage Wednesday afternoon June 30 at the Methodist parsonage in Tonka with Rev Donald H James officiating. They left on a trip to an unspecified destination and well wishes are extended.
The Irvin Chamberling farm south of town sold to Herman Wise. The Chamberlings plan to return to Wisconsin. The Thora Johnson estate farm sold to Fred Bentley family, and Join Ruger sold his farm to Ho and Ben Eden.
Lawrence Lester aged 35 died suddenly at his Austin Minnesota home last Saturday night relatives in Woden were informed. Survived by wife Alvina two children his parents Mr and Mrs George Lester of Woden two brothers Herman of Woden and George of California two sisters Mrs Alice Shoemaker Algona and Leona at home Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at St Johns Lutheran Church in Woden
Seven Boy Scouts went to Spirit Lake Sunday for a seven day encampment. They are Darrell Robinson, Billy Robinson, Billy Loebig, Dom Dwyer, Kay Olson, Roger Doughan and Donald Kleinpeter. Accompanying them are Mr and Mrs Everett Barr and their son Douglas, and Herbert Sargent of Sioux City. The Paris youngest son Gany is with his Maternal grandparents at Sioux.
The weekly new car truck list shows 12 passenger cars and five trucks licensed in Kossuth. New owners include Oldsmobile Harald Brinkman Algona Chevrolet Vincent Cruise Wesley Helen Klein Algona John Kollasch Algona Henry Schroeder Lone Rock Duane Sheppard Whittemore and others. Mrs Julius Matz and Rose Marie traveled to Williams to attend the wedding of Hileen Schweppe and Edward Schick of Milwaukee. The ceremony followed by a church breakfast at St Marys. Bridesmaids included Ruth Mary Hildman Rachel Matz Shirley Decker and Rose Marie Matz.
Titonka stores and the bank will be closed all day Monday July 5 in observance of July 4. One morning mail will be sent and the post office will stay open until 10 AM before closing for the day.
Titonka Lions club and families gathered at the school grounds for their annual picnic last Thursday evening. Mr and Mrs J L Miller of Burt attended as usual, with Luke as long time president. Arthur Budlong Hermaty Dreesman Qouls Bartlett and wives supervised a big feed. Some young men played baseball while others listened to a radio report on the national convention. The gathering was well attended and mosquito bags were notably absent this year.
Betty daughter of Mrs. Evelyn Moore Algona and Paul son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Bierstedt Lakota wed in Burt Lutheran church June 24 at 7 30 p m candlelight double ring ceremony conducted by Rev. Ferdinand Rieth. Attendants included Annabelle Grumbach maid of honor and bridesmaids Virginia Strayer Evelyn Meyer, with Paul Bierstedt and Conrad Bierstedt as attendants. Reception followed in church parlors. They plan to reside in Lakota at Bierstedt apartments after a short stay at Okoboji.
Miss Anna Weater daughter of Mr and Mrs Emil Weater of Wesley and Charlie DeRoss wed June 19 at St Helena s rectory in New York City The couple are on a trip to Florida and Cuba and will visit her parents in August The bride has been a dietitian in a Fifth Avenue hospital in New York City for several years
