Dairy Best To Let Cow Freshen In Fall
A. C. Kimrey of the North Carolina State College dairy extension urges breeders to have cows freshen in fall by calving late January to February. He says autumn freshening avoids heat stress, aligns with peak milk production, and typically yields higher butterfat prices in winter, boosting annual income per cow. He notes North Carolina creameries hold surplus butter in summer and seek winter fat.

Butter Consumption Soars Across United States
Government reports through July 1, 1931 show 24,000,000 pounds more creamery butter consumed in the first half of the year than in 1930, equating to three ounces per person. If the trend continues, year end gains could reach 20,000,000 pounds beyond 1929 surplus, when butter price fell 12 cents. Hoard's Dairyman credits educational dairy work for the rise.
