Forty Years Ago Farm Prospects Compared With Today
An analysis argues farm prices and land values rose while product prices and wages fell, noting corn 34 to 50 cents, oats 4 to 138 cents, beef and hogs gains, land at 190 now vs 30 an acre in 1870, labor costs up, interest up, and living standards shifting, with debate on whether today’s youth can acquire farms as earlier generations did.

Renter Builds Wealth Through Smart Farm Purchases
Mike Logs, long tied to the Chubb place near Algona, props up a thrift and stock-raising record. He bought 80 acres west of the Chubb farm and recently 160 acres from a Devine heir, the Barney Devine home farm in Verdale township, paying 16 000 cash for the quarter. Logs, who once earned 184 a month, now owns 240 acres, profitably built on his stock and shrewd buying. He believes he could add another quarter in a few years.
