Poultry expert R K Phillips at Town State College warns against assuming lights alone solve winter egg problems. At the Iowa Experiment Station trials test optimal illumination. results show total darkness with lights on yields variable egg production, with morning light, all-night lighting, and mixed schedules producing differing results. Phillips notes no definitive conclusions yet and cautions against dangerous practices.

Cheap but rich hay keeps ewes through winter
An Iowa State College expert outlines a low cost feeding plan for bred ewes using high quality legume hay such as alfalfa clover and soybean hay as the main roughage. If legume hay is scarce, substitution with timothy wild hay corn fodder or oat straw is advised along with high protein feeds and ground limestone. Limit concentrate to two to three pounds per head daily and rely on legume hay for balance. A note adds that corn silage is a good succulent alternative to reduce winter feeding costs.
