Seed science on hard seeds in alfalfa and red clover
Iowa State College seed tester L E Everson explains that seeds with high percentages of hard coats may germinate poorly in lab tests but thrive in field conditions after moisture and temperature changes. He notes hard seeds drop after storage, then sprout in spring, with nearly all alfalfa hard seeds germinating within a month and about 60 percent of red clover hard seeds doing so under adequate moisture.

Isolating young birds cuts leukosis in Iowa flocks
Iowa State College extension poultryman cites 25 flocks tested with chicks brooded over 400 feet from old hens showing no leukosis outbreaks by five months old. Ten flocks kept chicks far from hens had zero cases, while 15 nearer to hens had 20 percent leukosis. Mortality averaged 21.7 percent for distant broods versus 80.2 percent for close broods.
