Titonka Named for Buffalo Hunt Heritage in Iowa
The article recounts how W H Ingham A L Seeley and Thomas Covel hunted buffalo on northwest Iowa prairies in 1855. The herd crossed Buffalo Fork where the stream and nearby Buffalo township got their names. Capt H W Ingham suggested Titonka to honor the hunt and local geography, with Sioux language notes on tonka meaning big and ti black. The spur found later on R L Lamoreux’s farm is now Iowa Historical Society property. Titonka grew into a shipping town with a creamery bank and German heritage.
