Oat and Red Clover Tests Show High Purity and Germination
Iowa State College Seed Laboratory reports high average purity and germination for oats and red clover over the past year. Oats average 98.72 percent purity and 93.60 percent germination. red clover 95.67 percent purity and 84.64 percent germination. One in twenty oat samples fell below 50 percent germination. Noxious weed seeds in oats are dominated by quack grass, notably in one area where over 20 percent of samples contained it. Red clover shows higher total weed seed levels, averaging 1.95 percent versus the legal 1.5 percent, with over 40 percent of samples from one area exceeding the limit. The seed quality data may not reflect planting seed quality. seeder box surveys are needed. Also, four times as much vitamin A is required for turkey poults as for chicks.
