Price outlook for hogs cattle and lambs in 1940

Iowa State College extension economists forecast lower average hog and cattle prices over the next six months compared with early 1939, due to heavier marketings, while lamb prices may rise near season end. If foreign demand strengthens, declines could be less. The 1939 hog crop was a record, spring pig losses were high, and heavy hog marketings affected the corn-belt ratio. Cattle slaughter in 1940 may dip as breeders hold calves and cows for breeding, with Western lambs abundantly fed and marketing likely earlier in winter, potentially lifting spring prices.
