Algona Kossuth County Bar Association mails 3000 two page blank forms to farmers to summarize expenditures and income for income tax and depreciation schedules. The forms serve as a checklist to avoid deducting improper items and help substantiate depreciation claims when state and federal taxes are reviewed.
G M Browning of the Soil Conservation Service reports results from the Soil Conservation Experimental Farm in Page County. Corn yields in a corn oats clover rotation reached 85.2 to 86.1 bushels per acre in 1943 and 1944, vs 22.2 bushels for continuous corn. A rotation with oats and clover improved yields and reduced soil erosion, while nitrogen from red clover aided crops but did not meet all needs.

The quarterly conference approved a new church. a building committee will present plans soon while funds show progress. Doan services begin at 10 withSunday School at 9:30 and January 6 services moved to John Miller's home during cold weather until a new oil furnace is bought.
Harold Carlson performed a magic show at Boys Town last Friday evening before returning home. He found roads poor near Omaha with rain sleet and glare ice, better farther north after snowplows. At Boys Town he entertained 450 boys. Father Flannigan praised the performance and contortionist Betty Busch from Algona aided. Carlson plans more dates in southern Minnesota and aims to devote full time to his entertainment career.
town faced 16 inches of snow over Christmas and more since. residents shoveled walks while plows cleared streets. Wayne Miller used tractor shovels to move snow to awaiting dump trucks, and Bill Stott operated the town road maintainer to clear all streets. local estimate says this season's snow surpassed last winter's total.
Bill Stott found Monday morning that a water tank was nearly empty after a Sunday night leak. The break, between the French lumber yard and the depot, required shutting off mains across the south part of town for repairs, described as a difficult but necessary fix.
The United Service Women will meet Friday January 4 at Mrs. George Petersons home for an all day gathering with pot luck dinner. Members who took work home are urged to attend to finish three comforts six pillows six slip pers and complete handkerchiefs and wash cloths. The group had decided to meet at homes during the winter.
The Valley Victory 442 club met at Betty Ann Sonnenberg's home on Friday December 28. Six members answered the Toli call and a visitor attended. Lena DeVries presented the picture study "The Water Carrier" while leader demonstrations on rug making were shown. Lunch followed and songs were sung. The next meeting will be at Gertrude Veer's home.

Marvin Lockwood of Carning reportedly hopes not to attend as he faces an awkward incident with a cow kicking him and knocking out two teeth.
Private Falkert C. Stecker of Titanka Towa in the Eighth Army First Cavalry division is in Tokyo awaiting discharge and demobilization after 15 months overseas. A four campaign veteran, he earned the Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon with stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Philippines Liberation ribbon with two stars. He enlisted in December 1943 and plans to return to farming. he is the son of Fred Stecker.
Willie Kruse son of Mr and Mrs Robert Kruse returned home last Friday after a two year and five day service in the army with overseas bars and a Silver Battle Star He served in Africa and Europe including Normandy Northern France Ardennes Rhineland and Central Europe He earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Arrowhead and was treated at the 166th General Hospital with a back injury He missed only a few copies of the Topic while away.
Miss Stella Louie Lloyd daughter of Mrs Loratta Lloyd formerly of Wesley now Mason City and Gordon P Kaufmann son of Mr and Mrs Leon Kaufmann of Houston Texas were married Thursday morning December 27 at 8 30 in the Holy Family Catholic church in Mason City A wedding breakfast for 20 relatives and friends followed at the Hanford hotel Attending were Miss Helen Arend of St Benedict and the bride's brother Mike Lloyd Best man was Mike Lloyd The bride attended Wesley and Mason City Hamilton School of Commerce and is employed at Standard Oil Co offices
Susan Elizabeth Calhoun, infant daughter of Dr and Mrs Calhoun, died Friday December 28 in a Mason City hospital where she had been since birth on October 17. A prayer service was held at the Methodist church and she is survived by her parents and one brother Stephen.
A new sales barn will open in Buffalo Center next Saturday Jan 6. The DeVries Austin Company completed the building for owners R Z DeVries Sr and R T DeVries Jr. The facility features an attached enclosure for many animals and a gated pavilion to provide buyers a comfortable warm viewing area. The owners will serve fresh coffee and doughnuts on opening days.
The J. R. Schutter home wins first place for best decorated and lighted in Titonka. The Dr. R Ball home is second and the C R Krantz home third. Local Interstate manager G G Young will award lamps when available. Fewer homes lit this year due to bulb shortages, but prize and tradition are hoped to continue.
Hardy O. Buell, pioneer resident and former Burt banker, died at home after several weeks illness. Born August 10, 1868, in Ottawa Illinois, he moved to Kossuth County in 1881, later studied at Ames, and settled in Burt in 1890. He married Rena Lacey in 1891. Buell served as cashier and president of the First National Bank of Burt before retiring. Survived by his wife and a sister, funeral Friday at home, Rev. Ray K. Hill officiating. burial in Algona.

Mrs Ita Stohr died December 19 at age 72 years 9 months and 21 days after heart illness. Funeral services were held at Sam Manuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Rev Wm Planz presiding. She leaves a large family including husband Egge Stohr deceased 1928, seven children and two grandchildren. they lived on a farm in Winnebago County before moving to Britt and Northwood, with ties to Immanuel Lutheran Church. The obituary includes a hymn passage and notes her church loyalties and final resting rest in eternal life.
Iowa nurserymen report shortages of most fruit trees and cherries with strawberry plants especially scarce. H Nichols of Iowa State College warns higher prices and more sales of lower grade plants as growers prepare for spring planting. It takes years to grow fruiting stock and wartime labor shortages have reduced propagator staff and grafted stock.
A nephew of Miss Carrie Rogg of Clarinda, Lt. L. P. Ross, a navy diver, identified the first parts of the Chelan school bus that carried 16 drowned children. Though retired from active diving, Ross answered the emergency call to aid in the search.
