Cattle and Hog Market Outlook From Iowa State Expert
Francis Kutish of Iowa State University says cattle market strength may persist with no major weakness visible in the near term. January slaughter ran high and even with a 33 percent higher fed cattle supply over the next 75 days, marketings won’t exceed January levels. February prices were about 1.50 below last year but 1.25 above December lows. Hog marketings should stay near current levels into March as hog slaughter remains well above a year ago. Fall pig crop is only 2 percent larger than 1958, implying a smaller rise in slaughter for the year and lower activity in the second half.

Farm Shorts insights from Dean El Barnes County Extension Director
Dean El Barnes notes treated seed can raise yields by about three bushels per acre for oats and four for corn with hybrid seed corn companies ensuring seed treatment. Farmers must treat own oat seed early in spring. Lamb creep feeding uses six parts soybean meal or protein supplement, shifting to nine parts cracked corn and one part protein at four months. Germination percentages guide seed rates for alfalfa and clover, with higher germination needing fewer pounds per acre and lower germination needing more. Cows in low-producing Iowa group failed to cover costs last year.
