Ode to the Rural Mail Carrier
A poetic tribute praises the rural mail carrier who delivers daily, in all weather, across every road and trail. The ballad extols reliability, noting postcards, catalogs, and cold visits from Aunt Hattie arrive as sure as ever. It imagines a heavenly reckoning where postal workers enter the Pearly Gates with their mail smiling.

Pheasant toll very heavy in recent storms
The greatest storm toll to pheasants since the 1940 Armistice Day blizzard is reported with losses as high as fifty percent in some areas. Sub zero temperatures and winds caused ice buildup in birds' nostrils and throats, killing many in Emmet and Sac counties, while the broader range fears up to twenty five percent overall. Feeding programs and grain supplies are being distributed as conservation officers assess the damage and continue winter quail surveys in the southern state.
