Uranium Discovery Prize Spurs Prospector Army
In Chicago the atomic energy commission offers 10 000 dollars for each uranium deposit found, sparking a growing amateur prospectors’ movement buying over 200 000 dollars worth of a new Geiger counter. The device, called a nuclear eniffer, weighs two pounds, fits a coat pocket, and outputs 1 200 volts from two flash batteries, emitting clicks via a telephone headset near radioactive substances. Four Chicago scientists led by John Kuranz, a 27 year old physicist and VP of Nuclear Instrument and Chemical Corp, developed the counter now sold through major stores and fueling a million dollar yearly business.
