Oar Cars Plunge From Marquette Docks In Iron Ore Run
About a century ago on the Marquette Range Michigan ore cars descended two long grades to a Lake Superior dock. A strap iron railroad carried ore from mines to docks in the 1850s and gravity powered string loads to the water. Brakemen rode the trains and sometimes cars plunged past the end of the dock to Marquette harbor’s bottom. Later cargoes were dredged from watery graves where old cars leaped in.
