Time to Fight Cattle Grubs Now Till March
The common cattle grub costs U.S. cattlemen millions yearly and can be controlled by Rotenone applications from December through March. Grubs rest on the cattle backs during this period, making them vulnerable. Rotenone over several weeks is the most effective method, reducing losses from grubby hides and trimming beef. Packers incur about $3.50 loss per grubby head. The note also mentions self feeding grain and high protein for laying hens to save time.
Moisture control in Iowa hen houses improves welfare
Iowa State College extension poultrymen report five gallons of water produced daily by 100 hens, causing humidity and damp floors. Increasing litter, ground corn cobs, shredded corn stover, and insulation reduce dampness and lessen cleanings. Butterfat output per cow rose in November in Iowa.
