Buffalo Named Town Township and River by 1850s Hunt
Des Moines Register recounts a 1856 57 buffalo hunt led by Capt. Wm. H. Ingham that shaped local place names. The Buffalo river inspired the name, the township became Buffalo, and Titonka emerged for the town. Titonka is said to mean buffalo in Algonquian, while county historian Ben Reed claimed Titonka signified big black.
