Trucker Arrested for Speeding on Thanksgiving Day

Mason City trucker Lester Bailey was arrested by Patrolman J. West on Thanksgiving for driving 45 mph in Algona. He faced Justice H. B. White and was fined $1 and $11.75 costs after a trial. Clyde Luttrell of Deg? was also fined $3 and $3 costs for the same charge.

Algona fishermen Lloyd Wellendorf and E V Pierce recall a two month old walloped pike vanished when the stringer broke. The pair returned to Lake Okoboji and Wellendorf caught a wall eye that turned out to be Pierce’s fish still attached to the old stringer.

District Court in Spencer under Judge George Heald spent last week handling nonjury equity matters while a large petit jury list awaits release this week. Rites Held for Mrs C Barenthin

Mrs Otto Barenthin 64 died at home after a year long illness. Born Annie Hanken June 4 1882 in Bunde Germany she was confirmed 1899 and married Otto Barenthin January 12 1907. The family lived in Hamilton County Iowa Titonia Bancroft and later Bancroft where funeral services were held at home and Baptist church on Friday November 27. She left husband one daughter four grandchildren three sisters and several in laws.

City Dump Caretaker Takes Residence In New Hut

The town council has set up an 8 by 10 foot hut east of town for the city refuse dump caretaker. Frank Carlson from Alden is in charge and will reside there during day and night while overseeing the dump. A load of refuse costs ten cents. As partial payment, he may keep any metal found on site. Do not bring pocketbooks or silver to the dump. The caretaker owns any valuables found. Time to tidy up premises.

Iowa farmer wins second straight national corn husking title

Carl Carlson, brother of last year’s champion, husked 21 039 bushels in 80 minutes to win the national corn husking championship. Ted Balko of Redwood Falls Minnesota, a 1934 finalist and this year’s Minnesota state champ, placed second with 19 93 bushels amid poor corn stands and a muddy Newark Ohio field.

Reformed Church Notes on German Communion Service

Sunday morning the Quarterly Communion will be celebrated in German with a mission offering. The first Sunday in the month mission offering will be taken in Sunday School. An English service continues in the basement. A new hot water system is being installed as a gift of the consistory. The Young Peoples Club is preparing a Low German historic pageant for presentation soon.

International Stock Show Opens With Wide Showings

Mark Bacon and R. U L Krantz left Saturday night for Chicago to attend the International Stock Show at the Stock Yards. They shipped cattle and hogs from Titonka and Wesley, using the Milwaukee at Wesley for quick service. The event promises the best show in years with stock from across the United States and many foreign countries.

A large extended family reunion at Sexton brought together 24 members from Mason City, Klemme, Buffalo Center and nearby. Sunday fox hunt by 32 local sportsmen started at K and H Oil station and covered eight town sections. Elmer Peterson Will Denton Jay Graham and Ross Buffington scored fox kills. another hunt planned this week amid rising farmer losses to foxes and poultry theft. Abbe Winter trapped a fox near his farm house and others report fox kits seen in fields and ditches at dawn.

Swan Shot Near Ruthven Stuns Palo Alto County

A wild swan shot by an unknown hunter near Ruthven was found by a conservation officer near Lost Island Lake and displayed in Emmetsburg. The bird, part of a flock seen over Palo Alto county, had a seven foot wingspan.
