Popcorn Boom Grows in Iowa Counties
In Sac and Calhoun counties farmers expand popcorn crops as a high paying industry. Carland reports shipments to eastern markets after harvest. One farmer, Kent, planted 200 acres, yielding fifty to sixty bushels per acre. Prices range from one to four dollars a bushel. Planting late reduces frost risk and the crop matures three to four weeks earlier than field corn. Corn is shipped by car, not shelled.
