Six weeks tests dominate the week across grades with English grammar, history, and science topics. Students report on exams, class work, and a Thanksgiving break, noting spelling honors and a class pet hamster incident.
The Presbyterian aid will hold an annual bazaar and chicken supper at the church basement on Wednesday December 8. Local residents and families are noted visiting relatives and attending Thanksgiving events with Albert Gerdes and other local names appearing in gatherings and travel between Britt Mason City and Toledo. Funeral notices mention Mrs Marie Olson of Chicago with services held there.
Twenty seven members attended the membership party at the Legion hall Friday with Lois Peterson as hostess. The December meeting is set for Monday Dec 6 with Hazabeth Kennedy and Becca Hipp as hostesses. A Christmas gift exchange and games will follow the business session. Gifts capped at 50 cents. Packages for veterans gift shop and Department office shelf will be prepared. On Dec 18 boxes of homemade candy will be sent to Knoxville. Sympathy extended to Mr and Mrs Norman Lockrem for their anxious moment after their little KayAnn fell from a car. her recovery is reported good. Mrs Lockrem is Pan American chairman this year.
Art Murray prominent north Iowa figure died at his Bancroft home last Wednesday evening at 58 after years of ill health. Survived by wife, four sons, one daughter, and three sisters with two sisters predeceasing him. His life included World War I service, grain business leadership, ownership of about 14 Bancroft area farms, and youth baseball work through Junior Legion.
Edw A Sathofff is named acting postmaster after taking over Tuesday duties. Mrs Lucy Newville resigns after 16 years in the role plus seven months as substitute carrier. Julia Stott assisted often as staff. AAA election notices list township polling sites and dates across the county in December.

On Tuesday December 7 Dick Sloper will close out his farm at a point 1 miles west and 314 north of Titonka selling 17 head of livestock and farm machinery. Pringle and Oldenberg are auctioneers with Titonka Savings Bank as clerk. Clarence Bird also quits farming and will auction at his farm 814 miles south and 234 west of Woden, offering machinery livestock buildings and household goods, Herm Brummond as auctioneer and First State Bank of Britt as clerk. Sale begins at 11 o'clock.

Mr and Mrs Lawrence Wingert of Wesley were surprised at home on their 40th wedding anniversary November 25 by relatives and friends. The gathering featured visiting and lunch prepared by guests, and the couple received many pretty and useful gifts.

Lucy Newville thanks friends for cooperation during her tenure as postmaster and expresses hope the public will support her successor. She enjoyed serving the community and repeats gratitude.
Dr W F Hamstreet writes from Mesa Arizona on November 27 1948 describing a fine trip and new surroundings. He notes locating a duplex near main line and Lost Dutchman Camp, mail delivery setup, a toilet mishap, and Ann’s unsettled condition during travel. He mentions plans for future letters and asks to alert Mrs Newville to mail delivery arrangements.
Mrs Matilda Johnson 84 died at home Thursday evening in Wesley burial followed Sunday at Evangelical Free church She was born in Karlshamn Sweden March 24 1864 came to America at 19 and married Jacob Johnson in 1890 Eight children survive including George Warman Becker of Algona and others in Colorado Cedar Falls and Wesley Preceded in death by husband a daughter Carrie and a son LeRoy Burial in Evergreen cemetery.
The Buffalo Boosters 4 H club met at Verna Dell Willis home on November 20 with six members present. Members shared an improvement goal, Mrs Callies outlined the year’s clothing project, Colleen Rippen trop enrolled as a new member, and the next meeting on December 18 at Catherine Orthels home will feature a gift exchange. A delicious lunch was served by the hostess. Reporter.

Our November 4-H meeting was at Elizabeth Wabben's home. Members answered the clothing program question. Plans were made for the Christmas party on December 3 at Mrs. Irvin Beenken's home. Sylvester Hoff travels to Des Moines to begin work as a mechanic for the Colonial Baking Company. He left Sunday to take up the new position and will reside there while employed.
Titonka residents faced a strange aftereffect when a November 8 fire at the Titonka Locker damaged the building and rooms above. Fire seemed extinguished but a lingering smoke smell returned 17 days later. Inspectors found smoke seeping from a wall in the compressor room and dampened hot cork insulation with a garden hose in an attempt to halt the blaze.
Mr and Mrs Gordon Hansen celebrated their silver wedding anniversary with a Sunday dinner guest list including Mr and Mrs Ray Hansen Forrest Mr and Mrs Ross Buffington and Roger Mr and Mrs Van Hansen and Patty Lou of Laverne. A surprise card and silver coin shower was held by their daughter DruAlila who was absent due to starting a nursing job at Grinnett Community Hospital.
J R Schutter, local John Deere dealer, invites farmers and families to a John Deere Day program at Tyke Theatre on December 15. Admission by ticket only, free from the dealer. The Sugar Plum Tree stars Billie Burke and Don Wilson, a comedy about two city folks gifted a farm. Additional new all talking pictures featuring farm equipment andmodern farming practices will be shown. Free tickets available at the store.
A local notice recounts grocery thefts from cars on Saturday nights. Ernest misplaced groceries into another man’s car. Jerry Woekelman found groceries not his and learned the owner’s name. Mrs Peterson and family were saved from shortage, while Bill Peterson returned groceries and reported the error.
Henry Limberg who has served two and a half years in the U S army arrived in America with his bride of several weeks after being stationed in Germany for two years. They reached his parents Abel and Mrs Limbery's home last Friday and will live in Wodou for the present.
