Iowa items report casualties in France from Company C 168th Infantry and notes additional fallings in action and disease. It also covers Dr. J. W. Conzetl’s election as national dental president, vaccination campaigns, Y M C A volunteers in France, sugar conservation appeals, and local wartime efforts including agriculture and war savings drives.
Washington reports secretary McAdoo told the House Ways and Means Committee his plan retains existing excess profits tax rates with a maximum of 80 percent. The proposal targets about 0 percent of corporations and could yield 300 to 480 million dollars more than a prior plan. Also noted were discussions of a possible ten percent port tax on tropical fruits and broader revenue measures. Germany signals willingness to consider reasonable peace proposals amid wartime diplomacy.
Washington announced twelve thousand white detective service men will join limited military service. Provost Marshal General Somat Thies will train them by August 30 and assign to three camps Camp Upton Dodge Camp Greene. Four thousand to Camp Dodge and 75 thousand to Camp Greene. Thirty-four states to provide men under this ent.
Berlin confirms a report that the French steamer Djemnah of 3710 tons was torpedoed in the Mediterranean. Four hundred forty two men are missing according to the dispatch. In Petersburg Virginia on August 11, two thousand foreign-born soldiers from Camp Lee took the oath of allegiance to the United States with Louis F. Post participating.
Morning papers report German casualties from the war up to the end of July 1878 totaling about 6,000,000 with 1,400,000 skilled losses and additional figures for Paris in August.
On August 16 at Dayton American aviators led by Maj Claude Rhinehardt and British flyers under Dr Ged Charles Pyiey headed to Indianapolis faced disaster as Capt James Fitz Morris of the Royal Air Force was killed. Lt J W Johnson of Trafford Ala and another cadet were killed or injured when their craft crashed near Gif ford York Worth Texas. Calet Willigin Fr Turnstall of Brookfield Mass was killed when two aircraft collided several thousand feet above the ground.

News from New York reports the Brazilian motorship Madrugada of 1,618 tons was sunk by a German submarine off the AmbMexn east coast. Word of the loss circulated in insurance circles as details remained scarce.
Harold F. Jinxéa of Los Angeles California and Cadet Q F Gedeon of Titusville Pennsylvania were killed when their airplane crashed to the ground near Commack. The incident occurred on August 1 and the two men perished in the accident.
The Ways and Means Committee approved McAdoo's proposal to tax unearned income at 13 percent, with earned income above 4000 taxed at 10 percent and lower thresholds at 5 percent. Defined unearned income includes dividends on preferred stocks interest rentals royalties and annuities. The plan keeps personal exemptions at 1000 for single 2000 for married plus 200 per child while shifting payment to individuals and corporations in not all events.
American forces bombarded the yard at Dommar y Barencourt Verdun Metz area and attacked Longuyon Thiancourt. Revarah bursts observed. Central and southern parts of the yard at Dommar y Baroncourt were hit. Three direct hits on the track at Longuyon and 23 bombs on nearby warehouses. Military objectives also targeted at Thiancourt.
General Pershing reports an 18 De Havilland Four airplane squadron built in the United States made the first reconnaissance flight behind German lines using Liberty engines. Brigadier General Foutal led the expedition while Secretary Baker was informed of the mission.
London reports Mrs F Skeffington, released August 12 from Tinloway prison after deportation from Ireland, was denied a permit to return to Ireland.
Washington reports that the senate blocked action on the new man power bill to extend draft ages as a quorum failed. General March outlined plans for about 3 million men in France by next June with 18 divisions training at home, and 4 million under one commander could break German lines. Secretary Baker noted U.S. aim to concentrate forces on the western front and Italy, with immediate extension of drafts 18 to 45. The senate adjourned to Monday, with consideration slated for Thursday.
American troops begin disembarking at Vladivostok on August 5 1947 to join the international force aiding the Czechoslovak campaign in Siberia. The Twenty Seventh Infantry Regiment from Manila will lead with a second Philippine unit and additional U.S. troops. Col Henry W. Styer relinquishes command as Major General Grives takes overall control. Allied Arch reaches 160 miles south of Aychingel toward Volgda.
Several members of the American Red Cross ambulance service in Northern Italy have been decorated with the Hollon air cross for excellent conduct during a Mont. Grayson operation in June. The War Department announced furloughs for soldiers to work on farms for emergency needs, allowing enlisted men to engage in agricultural work.
