Central City Opera Festival Grows From 19th Century Boom
Central City Colorado prepares for its annual song festival with Metropolitan and City opera stars. The town’s fame stems from the 1859 gold boom that brought miners and $85 million in gold output, followed by decline and a 1932 reopening of the opera house. Today the festival shapes local life and historic buildings, including the Teller House and museums, into a living homage to the boom era.
