Fender family of ten in Iowa farm life noted for unity
Aug 7 report from Marshalltown Times-Republican profiles the Fender family near Carson Iowa. Ten adults eleven with the grandfather, all unmarried and unusually sized, live on a secluded 500 acre farm where John Fender operates a grain elevator and raises cattle. The widowed matriarch Mrs. Fender keeps the home intact as her husband wished, dusting rooms and tending a flower garden while visitors admire the family’s isolation and neighborly inclination. The five Fender sons and five Fender daughters share a remote hillside homestead, with a strong memory of past generations and a vow to maintain the homestead as a living tribute to their late forebears.
