Rome Through War and Home Front Reflections

A wartime letter recalls Nazi sabotage of dikes and hard fighting to reach Rome from the south. The writer notes floods, destroyed crops, and stubborn obstacles, then shifts to a Red Cross tour and a casual boast about American advances. He reports improved mail from home, a careworn promise to help Berlin’s defeat, and updates on Alice’s appendicitis recovery. The missive closes with affectionate family thoughts and a hint of longing for reunion.

New Tire Allocation Procedure Introduced Aug 1944

A new procedure to obtain certificates for purchase of all types of rationed tires began Aug 4 1944. Applicants must present at an OPA tire inspector who, if tires are unusable, prepares the application. The Central Tire Inspection Station at Anlicker's in Algona now handles the inspection and daily transfers to the War Price and Rationing Board. The board meets twice weekly to approve, with certificates mailed when quotas allow. Civilian needs are limited by heavy military demand and prior tire care abuses will jeopardize approvals.
