The Bankers Life Insurance Co sold sixteen farms totaling 4600 acres in Kossuth and Palo Alto counties to the Town Defense Relocation Corporation. Large tracts will be divided into 44 to 128 acre parcels for new tenants, affecting four German Township farms and prompting concerns over local farm placements and school changes as displaced tenants seek new farms near their longtime homes. Options reportedly cover over 12000 acres across four counties with land valued at about 109 dollars per acre.

At the regular August meeting held Tuesday evening at Esther Breen’s home, ten members answered the roll call. Ten dozen dish cloths were ordered to be sold by members to raise funds for unit activities. Legislation booklets on veteran action, distributed by the Legislation committee, came from Hon. F. G. Gilchrist of Taurens. A Home Defense Health Kit with a first aid chart and a three lesson course were distributed to attendees. Mary Young, membership chair, reports 22 members paid up with fifteen dues remaining. Since July, 54 Ted Cross garments have been cut out and are ready for sewing.

Harold Landtiser 43 of Gayonia Missouri died Thursday evening from injuries after a fall from scaffolding while constructing a new addition at the West Bend Elevator. Funeral services for A L Hicklin were held Thursday at the Woden Methodist church with Rev. John Peterson officiating. He died Monday afternoon July 28 after a period of ill health, age 60. Surviving are his wife, two daughters Nellie and Zella, a son Allen, two stepdaughters Gerret Eden and Florence, a sister, a brother, and other relatives. He lived on a farm southeast of Woden for years. Burial followed in Harrison Township cemetery at Swea City.
