Former Light Co. manager H C Nelson of Forest City Iowa resigns as Interstate Power District Manager to launch a complete farm management service for north Iowa and southern Minnesota absentee owners. Headquarters occupy the former City Hall building in Forest City opposite the courthouse. The new service offers full management beyond leasing and rent collection.
The service helps owners improve physical farm conditions and increase net income by soil work weed control building repairs and crop rotation. It cooperates with tenants to use labor materials and equipment efficiently, aiming to raise production lower costs and boost profits for all involved.
A L Peterson, renowned Algona photographer since 1892, died last Wednesday after two years bedridden following four strokes. Funeral was held Saturday. Surviving are Mrs Peterson and two sons Ralph and an elder son who served at the U S Naval Academy and was in the Navy. Ralph worked in Titania Savings Bank and other banks before moving to California and Los Angeles.
Three Lake Crystal youths Rudolph Rode Roscoe Guffey and Wilbur Allen escaped serious injuries when their car overturned and burned after losing control on highway 18 two and a half miles northeast of Whittemore Sunday morning around ten o'clock They were taken to Whittemore hospital for treatment later the car was found burned with only a front tire and clothing salvaged and the cause appeared linked to a short in the wires no bones were broken and injuries were minor including a mashed nose and cuts or bruises filed with local details.
California-born Donald Gerdes, son of Mr and Mrs Henry Gerdes, recently moved west with his parents and arrived in Wesley last week. He briefly visited his uncle, then traveled to Titonka to see his sister Mrs Wm Fritz and her family.
State supervised work cleans and deepens ditches along the highway south of Titonka to lower water levels and reduce past spring trouble. Minor repairs planned on routes to Woden and German Valley. Rainbow Bridge route to Bancroft to be rebuilt this year as part of Farm to Market program.
America's top dirt track stars will return to Algona for a national dirt track championship meet at the Kossuth County Fair on Wednesday, August 23. The Inter national Motor Contest Association approved the Algona half mile oval for title battles, with official sanction for the card set by Pair authorities. Notables listed include Homory Calling, Gus Schrader, Ray Leveratt, Catchop Grable, Swan Peterson and others, as entry blanks and prize money info are prepared for pilots nationwide.
Pastor Calvin Schuucker lists Sunday schedule with Church School at 9 30 Worship services at 10 30 and 10 30 in English. Evening Worship canceled after next Sunday through August 6. Choirs will not meet next month. Mrs I Sunderman to lead Sunday School auditorium service. attendance last Sunday was 200 in Sunday School 400 in morning worship and 160 in evening worship. Visitors welcome.
Good Hope Lutheran invites worship in German at 10:00 a m with Sunday School at 9:00 a m Pastor M A Schulz leads. Ladies Aid meets August 2 with Mrs T Rike Mrs EB Rike and Mrs 12 Paterson serving. No choir practice this week. the choir meets August 10 at the usual time.
Immanuel Lutheran at Four Miles East and One Mile North of Titonka announces no services on August 6 and August 13 as Pastor Adolph Kilin rests. Nearby pastors Rev Schulz Rev Bieso and Rev Kalberg stand by for pastoral care. No Sunday School or Bible class scheduled. God be with you until we meet again.
County recorder J. J. Dooley announced that 10 403 instruments were filed in the first seven months, up 3 861 from the previous year. Two thirds of farmers cooperative organizations are located in northern Iowa.
Algona hosted the eighth district convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary at the Kassuth county fair grounds with 146 registered from Algona and surrounding towns. Auxiliary and post members met separately, a Boone bugle corps public exhibition closed the daytime program, and a seven o'clock dinner and evening dance finished the event.
Five Kossuth county girls earned one thousand trees to be delivered next spring after taking part in a four day 4-H conservation camp July 23 to 26 at Dolliver State Park near Fort Dodge. Participants included Ruth and Dorothy Dreyer of the Fenton Forwards Ruth I Meine and Dorothy Koucher of the Lotts Creek Lassies and Patricia Matern of the Cresco Chums. The tree study, directed by G R Ramsey state extension forester, formed a key camp activity.
William H. St Clair announces Farm Security Administration programs enabling Kossuth County tenants farm laborers or share croppers to apply for long term loans to purchase farms. Applications accepted at PSU Pthsville and Algona offices through August 31 1939. Loans up to 40 years at 3 percent interest. farm inspected before approval. PSA loans money for purchase not the farm.
Mrs Ben U Meyers hosted a piano recital last Friday with Anna Brandt Wanda Young Doris W Franzen Margaret Franzen Drusilla Hansen Arles Pannhuk Betty Ann Sonnenberg Thresa Spear Florence Van Hoy Wilma Van Hoos Margrety Cordes Delores Isebrand performing solos and duets. Attendees included Gordon Hansen Tom Young George Sonnenberg Herman Franzen and others. Lunch followed. G D Brundage of Algona appointed manager of the Algona liquor store to begin Tuesday succeeding T C Sherman who led since July 1984.
Mrs George Bonacker and daughters Janice Joyce and Dawn returned last Wednesday from Corvalis Montana where they visited Mrs Bonacker's parents Mr and Mrs Wm Horley. They drove home in two days and four parts of Wednesday night, finding Montana weather warm and pleasant at night. Father built a playhouse at the rear of the home, a full little house with table chairs electric lights a porch linoleum floor and a day bed. Painted white with green trim the playhouse is worth a visit and the girls will be glad to show it.
The Helfners live in Montana fourteen years with three daughters and a son, enjoying cool nights and green irrigated land. Mrs. Bonacker and her daughters visit often, with Mr. Bonacker also traveling there. They note differing travel patterns on a recent trip, with two overnight stops outward and one on the return.
The regular monthly meeting at Beth Miller’s home drew a good crowd with an engaging program and social hour. August’s meeting is slated for the fourth Friday at the Denton home. The unit decided against Indian Day due to members’ ties to other stands. Auditors Camilla Cooper and Beth Miller accepted the treasurer’s 1938 39 report. Rose Bonacker reports ten paid members. dues may go to Secretary Mathilda Walk or to Sacha Denton. Beth Miller notes all contributions paid up, treasurer bonded, and 600 copies ordered. Evan Petersen reports a $1 cash contribution for the Knox ville district party for veterans born in August, plus cookies and supplies for the Cookie Jar drive. Six dozen homemade cookies will be sent for August. Mark your calendars for the 4th Friday in August.
A local incident in Alton last week involved a marshal who triggered a false five alarm fire alert after claiming he pressed the wrong button. Fire crews responded to the scene, and authorities began an inquiry into the mistaken alarm.
The Orthel family re union was hell at Eagle Lake Sunday. Those present were Mr and Mrs James Magpatrick and family Clara and Anna Orthel Mr and Mrs Henry Orthel and family all of Woden Mr and Mrs William Orthel and family of Thompson Mrs Sophie Colter and family Oscar Orbhel and Charles Colter of Britt Mr and Mrs Jake Hipley Carl Hipley and William Hipley all of Wasley.
Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Bauer traveled to Hankinson North Dakota on Saturday to visit his mother Mrs. Mary Bauer and siblings Gertrude Clara Gregory and Galix of St. Cloud. A family reunion was held Sunday with Luke of Indiana missing the gathering. Mrs. Bauer's mother Mrs. Mary Uhlenhake assists at the Bauer home.
Twenty eight friends and former classmates honored Arnold Buns on a ten day navy furlough with a midday party. A plenary supper was served at 7 30 on the Chas Baach lawn followed by a dance in Garner.
Roy H. Zunksl of Panton pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated in Emmetsburg before Judge F C Davidson. Fined 300 dollars with staged suspensions and a one year license revocation. Tarnest Wallace of New Richland pled guilty to forgery and was sent to the state penitentiary at Hort Madison for up to ten years. Mrs. Marcella Erdmann of Algona filed for divorce from Herman G Erdman on cruelty grounds seeking custody of five minor children.
Fireworks displays nightly at the 1939 Kossuth County Fair will close the entertainment program in front of the grandstand. MWhearle-Duffield Fireworks Inc of Chicago secured the contract to present a show featuring the Farm Features Emblem, a comedy number, patriotic features, new mechanical effects, and an elaborate aerial display. A company expert will supervise assembly and firing, with nightly changes to the feature set pieces.
The third annual young bird show of the Iowa pigeon breeders association in Algona drew a large crowd with 180 birds exhibited. Thirty three exhibitors from Iowa and Minnesota entered ten varieties over Saturday and Sunday.
The hospital at Iona City operates a blood bank with deposits of many blood types kept on hand for rapid use. About 26 to 30 different bloods are stored in the facility for quick access when needed.
Preparations for Titonka Indian Day on Tuesday August 15 include seven big free acts six street acts a balloon ascension and rides contracted for. The Tyke Theatres will open all afternoon and evening while a Coliseum dance features the Algona Rhythm band. Bancroft unbeaten in Worth Kossuth League will face an All Stars team picked from seven clubs with Oliver Young of Wesley as manager. The 1939 celebration aims to be the largest yet with active committee efforts across the town.
Mrs Simon Bergman aged 85 86th birthday celebrated Sunday July 30 at the family homestead in Kossuth county pioneers. Attendants included four daughters Mrs Henry Suken Mrs Hid Ricks Mrs Jake Gigler and Mrs JP Schwartz with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family and neighbors joined for baskets Juneh cake ice cream and photos as well wishes poured in for many more birthdays.
