LAMB SUBSIDY PROGRAM CHANGES AUG 5 ANNOUNCED
Robert M. Loss, chairman of Kossuth county AAA, says after August 5 a subsidy will be paid to all sellers of sheep and lambs who sell to legally authorized slaughterers. CCC will fund payments via AAA county committees. The old 96 cent per cwt subsidy to packers ends August 4. New rates run August 5 through June 1945: 1.50 to 2.50 per cwt for 65 to 90 lb lambs. 2.15 to 3.16 per cwt for lambs over 90 lb. 1.00 per cwt for all other sheep and lambs. August rates: 1.50 for 65 to 90 lb lambs. 2.15 for lambs over 90 lb. 1.00 for all other sheep and lambs. Sellers should keep invoices as evidence for payments after August 4. Loss says subsidies aim to spur activity through regular channels and keep meat prices reasonable for consumers.

Rabies Rise Noted in Iowa Animals Through July 1944
Iowa health officials warned of rising animal rabies this year with 52 cases reported through mid July across 24 counties. Dogs led with 26 cases, followed by horses eight cows seven and other species. no human cases yet. Guidance urged prompt wound care vaccination and observation of bite animals, with emphasis on summer spread due to dogs roaming freely.

Iowa State College researcher Herb Howell analyzed 200 Iowa farmers on 160 acre farms. The top third earned an average profit of 3040 dollars while the bottom third showed a 548 dollar loss, driven by better feed efficiency, disease control, and livestock practices. Top farmers weaned 644 pigs per litter versus 545 for the low third, and corn yields averaged 66 versus 52 bushels per acre, with superior rotations boosting per acre income by about one dollar.

Mrs J J Harms Dies at Algona Hospital
Mrs J J Harms, born Hilda Tjarks in Germany in 1882, died July 29 1945 at age 63 after illness and pneumonia. She lived near Alden and Titonka before joining Ramsey Reformed Church, leaving three children, five grandchildren, and several in laws and friends in sorrow. A severe wind storm with hail struck south and southeast of Titonica Friday evening causing major damage near the Minnie Oesterreicher and Bill Peterson farms. Oats fields were flattened and corn blown down. Peterson’s machine shed and a steel crib were destroyed.
