A Q Smith Dies at 80 After Long Lakota Life
A Q Smith aged 80 of Lakota Iowa died Friday evening after a long life of energy and service. Born September 10 1858 in Wayne County Ohio he moved to Iowa as a child and lived on farms in Johnson Benton and Lincoln counties. He married Sylvia Abel in 1878 and had four children. later married Emma Christensen and had two more. Survived by his wife five children twelve grandchildren eight great grandchildren and a brother S H Smith. Funeral attendance from several states noted.

Government to plant forest belt across Midwest climate project
An executive order signed July 11 by President Roosevelt allocates 15 million dollars for the start of a vast shelter belt. The plan aims to construct a 100 mile wide and 1000 mile long belt of trees to modify climate and ease drought conditions in the drought-stricken Midwest.
