John J Harms died Sunday at 2 p m from heart failure after weeks of illness at his home. He received medical care and nursing but died despite effort. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 30 at his home and at the Reformed Church at 2 p m with Rev Calvin Schnucker preaching. Obituary was omitted until next week.
The 1862 county records show Ashuelot as a leading, ambitious hamlet with Ashuelot realty valued at 7662 dollars and the county real and personal total at 369090. Irvington, Algona, and Ashuelot contributed to a countywide mindset of Ashuelot as a coming metropolis.
Flax is ready to harvest when bolls are ripe and stems redden to brown. In wet seasons or late sowing, flowering may continue. the operator should judge optimal cutting time to maximize feed, regardless of stem ripeness, noting early ripening for most seasons.

Heavy rain Thursday brought about three inches in sections of the vicinity, welcomed by nearly everyone after two weeks of hot, dry weather. The downpour occurred last Thursday afternoon and eased the dry spell that preceded it.
William Brandt nearly 87 years old remains in good health for his age despite hot weather. In recent years he has been driven by his children between farms to visit his offspring, rather than walking as he once did.
A 7 1 2 pound baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Buckholdt last week Wednesday, giving the Buckholdt family two children, a boy and a girl. The proud father smiles at the joy of a bouncing healthy son.

John Michael Fox of Sac City Iowa approaches his centennial in the near future remarking on coasting after a century. Born in 1882 in Alsace Lorraine he joined his grandfather in the United States and settled in New York state before moving to Iowa in 1864 to run a hardware store with his sons for over 70 years. He has never used tobacco or intoxicants and follows a vegetarian diet with light meals and daily walks.
Henry Stecker and Miss Margaret Sleper were married at the American Lutheran Church with Rev. H. W. Schoenlein presiding. Attendants were Mrs Martha Wibben and Evert Sleper. The couple will reside with the groom's father. May Fred Implement Building planned by Harlow Johnson at Titonka.
Corn Hog contract signers in Kos suth County must reduce excess corn acreage by August 3. W J Frimml, chairman, says compliance checks completed across all townships. 63 compliance supervisors measured planted acreage to assess eligibility, with at least 25 percent of corn and hog base required unless unusual circumstances apply.
The County Board of Supervisors met last Thursday and passed a resolution directing the County Farm Bureau to vacate its Court House offices by September 1. John Uhlenhake was named Justice of the Peace for Whittemore township with a $6500 bond approved. A. B. Frankl of Irvington had his Class C beer permit and beer bond approved with a budget hearing date set for August 6, 1985, at ten o'clock. Drains 166, 27, 82, 80, 43, 4, 60 and 3 were assigned to repair or reconstruct by Supervisors Baum and Balgeman. The County Auditor was authorized to issue warrants for beer refunds due July 1, 1935. Geo. W. Brown resigned as Weed Commissioner for Cresco township. A. H. Clayton was appointed in his place.
Ollie Foertsch fell ill and is bedridden. Numerous residents and visitors are noted from Algona Whittemore Cedar Falls Carroll Fort Dodge Bancroft Bancroft to Omaha, with CCC enlistments and local sports results. Mentions of ship, theater party, waves of travel, a school superintendent wedding, and injuries from a gravel truck accident.
The contractor Mr. Schweppe who is erecting the Reed residence has the job about completed. The cappings doors and other finishing work is being completed this week.
There was no court held last week and none is contemplated. New cases filed include Edward Capesius versus H J Mc Grady and L F Smith for divorce Lillian Mathison versus Peter V Mathison for divorce Adam Schumacher versus Anthony Stork and wife foreclosure Equitable Life versus Ralph Schumacher et al foreclosure. Bigfork boys Ches ter DeLong and Edward DeLong, ages seven and nine, announce they will enter this year’s Itasca county fishing contest with a 27 pound 7 ounce muskie catch. Their mother helped after the line bucked and they battled the big fish for twenty minutes.
Betty Rash spent the weekend in Burt and other residents like Carl Danner Amy Olson and Vernon Godfredson are noted for recent visits and work. Several families including the Bart letts Burgers and Sigsbees are mentioned with gatherings at their homes and towns nearby. A pitchfork injury to Elvin Godfredson is reported as he recovers.
Mr and Mrs Cunningham and son of San Antonio Texas visit daughter Mrs L J Patrbanks and family. Several households from Burt Algona Lakota Titonka and Elmore join in weekend visits and Sunday gatherings. 4H club team Violet Long and Rachel Becker of Portland Peppy Pals demo group spend Monday planning demonstrations with Mrs Tony Jandl.
The 1985 Buffalo Day organizers expect a record turnout with doubled ride and stall applications. A free lunch of BBQ beef sandwiches and coffee starts at noon. The Buffalo Center band performs, a flying trapeze act entertains, and a 3 PM ballpark game features Lake Mills Canners vs Algona Grays.
The 1280 corn hog contracts for Kossuth County were approved by the State Board of Review and sent to Washington for payment. Checks are expected to arrive in about three weeks. Kossuth County received more corn hog money last year than any other county in the state or the United States.
A. Renkes cashier of Smith Trust and Savings Bank and A. H. Fletcher local auctioneer, both Morrison Illinois, with Mr. Smith's brother, visited the Topic office Thursday. They came to oversee repairs on the Taylor farm south of town now owned by the bank and planned to return in a week or two to attend to farming interests.
