Improve Alfalfa by Topdressing in Early Spring
Extension agronomist J A Stritzel from Iowa State College recommends topdressing alfalfa and other legumes in early spring before growth begins. Use 200 to 300 pounds of 0-20-0 or 0-20-10 fertilizer if needed, based on soil tests and at least six plants per square foot. Do not apply nitrogen as it promotes grasses and not legumes. Lime is not beneficial, and should be applied before seeding. focus on phosphate or phosphate potash mixtures for topdressing.
