How to prune grapes says prune for renewal and balance

Iowa State College horticulture outlines key grape pruning rules. Fruit comes from last season's growth, renewal wood must be annual, and excess old wood hinders vigor. A vigorous vine yields 40 to 48 buds with four canes of 10 to 12 buds, chosen by vine vigor and experience.

Spurred grape canes planted with 30 by 30 foot spacing

The department notes that spurs, each one or two buds in length, used to form next season's fruiting canes may be planted on the same land area. Plantings should not be less than 30 feet by 30 feet, and trees require the same soil whether in small or large numbers. Do not plant within 15 feet of a fence.

Plant Apple Trees Early In Iowa Orchards

Iowa State College horticulturists advise planting young two year old grafted apple trees as soon as spring soil is workable. Secure disease free stock, prune damaged roots, pack soil firmly, tilt trees toward the wind, plant two inches deeper, and space at hexagonal 55 trees per acre for economy over 48 per acre in the square system.
