Titonea School earned three Superior ratings at the district music contest, one more than last year, with the boys glee club choir and a flute solo leading the call. The report notes Excellent marks for several ensembles and soloists, and shows Miss Phyllis Dugan to accompany a Methodist church choir in upcoming cantatas.
The April 1 closing of the 1938 corn sealing program shows 3,318 loans on 3,413,260 bushels valued at 1,945,533.12 dollars. Loans and bushels exceed 1937 totals, with more than four times the loans and over five times the bushels sealed. A corn sealing inspectors meeting was held April 4 at the Kossuth soil conservation office. 14 inspectors will start re inspections next week to verify corn condition and crib sturdiness to protect against damage.

Ralph Steinman of Algona faced Judge F C Davidson in Kossith district court and paid a 300 dollar fine plus costs for operating a vehicle while intoxicated with scheduled installments through December and January 1940. Frank Henson of Algona pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, receiving a one year sentence in county jail but paroled for good behavior to his employer M G Norton. Robert Ebert, an ex-convict from Deer Lodge Montana, got a five year sentence at Anamosa for stealing from box cars at Spencer and entering the Whittemore creamery. George H Lichter of Algona received an 80 day jail term by Justice of the Peace J P Dawson on drunkenness charges, with 27 days suspended on good behavior and costs of 4.65. Frank J Caylor of Algona faced a pending case for driving while intoxicated with no immediate disposition in Danson’s court. Henry Gerde had bail set at 500 dollars and his case continued on desertion charges. Petit jurors were called and Dr J G Clapsaddle vs Arthur Haag et al set for trial on a note. The state of Iona vs Bernard Speraw was listed next. No new district court cases were filed last week. probate matters include the Albertina Thiel estate, guardianship of Vincent Isaacson, Nita M Isaacson named guardian, Karen G Nielson estate, Tommy P Nielson administrator.
The third phase of the Farm Bureau course wraps up for German and Buffalo township women. The fourth phase Modern Trends in Bread Making starts April 14 at Mrs John Boekelman home with Mrs Ruth Seaton Hicks in charge. Follow-up meetings on Feeding the Sick occurred in German township from March 17 to March 31 at multiple homes with various hosts. In Buffalo township three follow-up sessions occurred March 14 to March 31 at several homes with named hosts.
Pastor M A Schulz invites participation in German communion on Good Friday April 7 at 10 30 with confessional services at 10 00. English worship Sunday April 9 at 10 30 with Sunday School at 9 80. Confirmation class Saturday 9 30 to 12 noon. Members urged to bring Topten self denial envelopes to church Sunday.
Margery Ann Fitzpatrick was hostess to the Bingham Boosters 4-H club Saturday afternoon. The program featured songs The Field Song and Come to the Fall, a trustee talk by Margrete Tjaden, health talk Poster by Lucille Anderson, bird talk The Blue Bird by Ruth Ann Kramer, picture talk Nadonn of the Chair by Lucille Anderson, and a Floor Plan demonstration by Margrete Tjaden. Lunch followed an account-keeping review. Arlys Fredrickson will host the next meeting April 20.
WODEN Earling Swenson and Thelma Hagen of Lake Millis were married at the Presbyterian church at 2 p m with Rev Henry Kruse officiating. The bride wore a peach dress and carried sweet peas and jonquils. The couple will reside in Woden and Swenson will take over the Korte business as the Kortes move to a Crystal Lake farm.
A baseball meeting is set for Thursday at 7 30 PM at the Batt and Smith barber shop. All interested players are urged to attend to discuss important business for the team.
A Tyke Theatre produced amateur talent contest winner from Titonka will be broadcast on KGLO Mason City Friday evening April 14 from 9 to 9 30. The full program will appear in the Mason City Globe Gazette and in this paper next week. The Tyke Theatre management arranged the broadcast, featuring Titonka area talent.
Elizabeth Ann Inman of Bancroft will represent Kossuth county in the state 4-H long time record contest, announced by Mrs. Ruth Seaton Hicks home demonstration agent. Inman is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Inman and has seven years in club work, having served as past president, now secretary and treasurer of Bancroft Busy Pals. Her records placed first in the county contest that recently closed.
County recorder J. J. Dooley reports 8,180 more instruments filed in the first quarter this year than the same period last year. From Jan 1 to Apr 1 this year 6,400 instruments with fees $2,014.90 vs 3,220 instruments last year totaling $1,262.40.
Rain Tuesday evening damaged roads leaving many muddy holes and buses delayed or stuck. By Wednesday morning nearly all routes were barely passable, with officials hoping they will settle soon into good condition.

Mr and Mrs D J Zerbe have sold the Wesley News-World to Mr and Mrs Charles Basler of Renwick and moved to plan for their new life in Winfield Iowa Basler began their first edition in Wesley after Basler graduated journalism in June 1938 Zerbes will assist in Winfield publishing and have sold their house to L T Root.
The Lions Club met in the Titania Savings Bank directors room on Tuesday evening. F C Missal County Superintendent J M Baggs and County Engineer Chas Merten spoke, sharing defense data and Philippine War experiences. Next meeting scheduled for Thursday April 13 at 6 30 pm a luncheon at Intermill Cafe.
John Ward was overcome by smoke while attempting to extinguish a fire at his home southwest of Woden around 5 am Tuesday. He was taken to Mercy hospital in Mason City for oxygen. The unknown origin blaze caused heavy smoke damage and destroyed a dredger and the room floor upstairs.
A special committee on agricultural relief was appointed this week by the Republican floor leader in the Senate from Chickasaw. The Senate authorized the committee with power to introduce bills and perform functions of standing committees. The chamber may reconsider the farm tenancy bill and landlords’ liens, and a permanent mortgage moratorium bill is rumored. The House and Senate debate road fund usage for secondary roads, with constitutional questions looming. Chain store tax plans were debated. a compromise tax with a leader provision may pass. The child welfare bill proposes $800,000 state funds to match federal and entity funds for dependent children. The highway patrol consolidation bill sets a four year term for the safety commissioner at $4,000 salary. About 34 small consolidation bills were approved, routing tax collection to a Tax Commission. Civil service for highway-maintenance staff was approved with a 2 percent annual discharge clause. The truck bill passed 78 to 24, removing the ten mile tax to enforce truck laws more practically.
Bonnie Gard, four, of Cylinder, received a severe head bump Friday evening when thrown to the floor as her father’s auto braked to avoid a car that failed to stop at McGregor and Jones streets. Officers were called to investigate the collision.
