A fragmentary Tipton directory lists numerous merchants and professionals including Grocers, Druggists, a Dentist, Blacksmith, Wagon Maker, Tailor, Farm and general dealers. It notes locations around the Public Square and Main Jefferson streets and references the Anderson House hotel and several offices.
A Tipton reader relates a childhood tale of a great flood event near Sal Thumper and a drowning of Sal Thumper’s hoop skirted figure, describing villagers burning log heaps to divert floodwaters, a rescue mission, and a warning about future storms. The letter mentions local names Jack Redmun, Starkesburg, and Mary Punkin as part of the remembered lore and future plans for a four story barn.
A travel tale set on a July day from St. Paul toward Alton recounts a Quixote-like Yank who boasts of Jerusha and a horde of farm assets. The narrator exchanges wary banter, noting Jerusha’s wealth and the suitor’s push to press on to Stillwater as the ride continues.
