Indian Intelligence and St Paul Cavalry skirmish near Sunrise
The St Paul Light Cavalry Company departed for Cambridge to remove Chippewa Indians causing depredations near Sunrise settlement. In pursuit near a prairie, the Indians surrendered after a brief engagement in which Cavalryman Donnell was killed and another was wounded. Five Indians were captured as troops returned to the city with the dead comrade. Residents fear Indian vengeance, and many settlers relocate to the city amid mixed reports and cautious withholding of judgment. A letter from Travers des Sioux dated August 23 notes heavy losses among Ink-os-du-tah’s band, with Sisseton forces involved.
