The letter from Mr Nasby, dated November 9 1865 in Tipton is a rambling, humorous sketch of a Democratic candidate’s fortunes in New Jersey, his promised position as Doorkeeper to the House of the Lord, and a collapse under Copperhead attacks. It blends political complaint, personal misfortune, and a satirical view of wartime politics with mock seriousness and regional dialect. The piece also includes a sermon-like account of a forged sentence of death against Jesus and assorted anecdotes from politics and theater.
