A firebrand speech denounces democracy’s stance on slavery, mocks “negro equality,” and exposes harsh anti black rhetoric. Owen Lovejoy aids fugitives, defending humane aid over slave-catcher brutality, and condemns colonization fantasies and racial violence.
Hon. J W Grimes responds to a Dubuque Scott and Des Moines counties letter asking whether Republicans favor naturalization laws as they stand and oppose discrimination against adopted citizens in voting. He Denounces Massachusetts suffrage changes as dangerous, supports equal rights, and notes Massachusetts should defeat the amendment. He signs as JAMES W. GRIMES Burlington April 30 1860.
A State Convention of the Republicans of Town assembles in Des Moines at 11 o clock on Wednesday June 22 1858 to nominate Governor Lieutenant Governor and three Supreme Court judges for the October general election. Delegates include one per organized county plus extra by votes for Elijah Sells Secretary of State. County committees urged to convene for delegate appointments and party organization.
The Republicans of Cedar County are requested to meet at the Court House in Mars Convention at 1 o clock P M on Saturday the 4th day of Jane next to select ten delegates for the State Convention to be held at Dee Moines on the 22d day of June next to nominate candidates for State offices. An Iowa Cedar County court order schedules a public sale at the Steam Saw Mill in Massilon on June 18 1859. The auction will offer Sloper's mill with a three acre lot, adjoining land parcels totaling 17 96 acres, another eleven plus-acre tract, and ten town building lots. Proceeds go to satisfy debts of Thomas Sloper deceased with terms: one third cash, one third in six months, and the balance in one year. Local administrators David and Barbara Sloper oversee. May 4 1850.
