Ottawa Indians in Kansas begin allotment and settlement plan
The Ottawa Indians moved to Kansas in 1836 and now number about 210. The government plan dissolves tribal organization and grants land in severalty with citizenship for adopting civilized life. About 25 000 acres are divided among individuals, 20 000 acres set for education, and 80 000 acres to be sold to approved settlers as Rev Hutchinson seeks 200 suitable families in New York for a settlement.
