Democratic State Convention Endorses Pendleton in Iowa

The Democratic State Convention met in Des Moines with over 600 delegates. Charles Negus was elected permanent chairman and several district electors and national delegates selected. A heated debate led to endorsing Pendleton with instructions to vote for him at the Democratic National Convention and a platform denouncing bondholders and backing greenbacks.

Wine making in California valleys blamed for social decline

The editor of the Pacific reports that wine production, now cheap and widely consumed, leads to intoxication and social ruin. He cites sober men becoming habitual drinkers, a seventeen year old girl drunken, and a leading man tallying five acquaintances degraded by wine, warning the production’s growt h will curse the land if unchecked.
